It’s officially been a year since I stepped in as a Graphic Designer for the Virginia Highland District Association, and honestly, it’s been a whirlwind of neighborhood events, sponsor logo organization, and creative freedom!
If you know Atlanta, you know Virginia Highland (VaHi) is one of the city’s most iconic and historic neighborhoods. My job? Assisting the creative direction and visual storytelling for the district. I design print and digital assets that contribute to our small businesses, local events, and the overall charm that makes this place feel like home.
A Year of "Firsts" and Anniversaries
Being part of the VHDA means I’ve had my hands in every major event that brings this community together. Some of my favorite projects from this past year include:
Virginia Highland Farmers Market: Developing digital and print collateral to keep our local vendors and neighbors connected every week.
Porchfest: I had the honor of designing for the 5th Anniversary (and now, I’m already deep into the visuals for Year 6!). It’s easily one of the most vibrant festivals in the city.
Winterfest: Creating those cozy, seasonal branded assets that turn the neighborhood into a winter wonderland, in collaboration with Virginia Highland Civic Association.
Mardi Gras Festival: I’m especially proud of this one! I led the creative direction and design execution for our first-ever Mardi Gras festival. Bringing that energy to the streets of Atlanta was a massive highlight, it was a major success!
Supporting Small Businesses & District Initiatives
Beyond the big festivals, a huge part of my role is supporting our small business owners and neighbors. Whether it’s designing for Owner Happy Hours or creating signage and social media graphics for district-wide initiatives, the goal is always to celebrate the evolving culture of Virginia Highland. I even got to work with Virginia Highland Security Patrol to create friendly reminders of caution and safety throughout the streets.
It’s been an incredible year of learning how to balance the well known brand elements with fresh and creative design ideas. I’m so grateful to play a part in the visual legacy of this neighborhood.
Here’s to another year of designing what comes next for VaHi!
